Privacy Notice

Last updated: 26 April 2026

1. Who we are

Masala Holdings (Pty) Ltd ("we", "us", "our"), registered in South Africa and trading as AskGod (askgod.co.za), is the controller of the personal information described in this Notice. This Notice explains what we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have.

2. Personal information we collect

  • Account data: name (or display name), email address, password hash, profile picture (if you upload one), authentication provider identifiers (e.g. Google sign-in).
  • Reflection content: the questions you submit and the AI-generated guidance, including any journal entries you choose to save.
  • Subscription & billing data: subscription status, plan type, customer ID and subscription ID held by our Merchant of Record (Paddle). We do not store your card details.
  • Usage & technical data: device and browser information, IP address, log timestamps, basic interaction events, and error reports used to keep the service running and secure.
  • Communications: emails you send us and our replies, including transactional emails (welcome, receipts, cancellations) you receive from us.

3. Why we use your information & legal bases

  • To provide the service — creating your account, generating reflections, storing your journal, personalising greetings. Legal basis: performance of a contract with you.
  • To process payments and manage subscriptions — via Paddle as our Merchant of Record. Legal basis: performance of a contract and legal obligation (tax/accounting).
  • To keep the service safe and reliable — preventing abuse, debugging, monitoring quotas. Legal basis: legitimate interests in operating a secure service.
  • To communicate with you — service notifications, support replies, and (only if you opt in) product updates. Legal basis: contract performance, legitimate interests, or consent for marketing where required.
  • To comply with law — responding to lawful requests and meeting legal obligations. Legal basis: legal obligation.

4. AI processing

When you submit a question, the text is sent to a third-party AI model provider via our backend in order to generate a response. We do not use your reflections to train external models, and we ask our providers not to either. Please avoid submitting highly sensitive personal information (for example, government ID numbers or confidential medical details) you would not want processed by an AI provider.

5. Who we share information with

  • Service providers (subprocessors) who help us run AskGod, including hosting and database providers, AI-model providers, email delivery providers, and analytics & error-reporting tools. They process data on our instructions under appropriate contracts.
  • Paddle, our Merchant of Record, for the sale of subscriptions, payment processing, subscription management, tax compliance and invoicing. See Paddle's privacy notice at paddle.com/legal/privacy.
  • Professional advisers such as lawyers and accountants, where necessary.
  • Authorities where we are legally required to disclose information.
  • A successor entity in the event of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, subject to standard confidentiality protections.

We do not sell your personal information.

6. International transfers

Some of our service providers operate outside South Africa, including in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom and United States. Where personal information is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses and equivalent mechanisms.

7. How long we keep your information

We keep your account data and journal entries for as long as your account is active. If you close your account, we delete or anonymise personal information within a reasonable period, except where we need to retain it to comply with legal, tax, accounting or fraud-prevention obligations (typically up to 7 years for billing records).

8. Security

We use industry-standard technical and organisational measures including encryption in transit, access controls, isolated database tenancy with row-level security, and regular reviews of our subprocessors. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Your rights

Depending on your country of residence, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, to withdraw consent, and to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority (for example, South Africa's Information Regulator, or your EU/UK supervisory authority).

To exercise these rights, email privacy@askgod.co.za. We will respond within the time required by applicable law (generally within 30 days).

10. Cookies & similar technologies

AskGod uses essential cookies and local storage required to keep you signed in, remember your free-question count, and operate the checkout. We do not currently use marketing cookies. If we add optional analytics cookies in the future, we will request your consent first where required.

11. Children

AskGod is not directed at children under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

12. Changes to this notice

We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email or in-app notice. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
